Hot Rocks is about as good as a greatest hits package can get. A double album packed with 21 essential tracks that chart the Stones’ rise from scrappy blues revivalists to rock and roll royalty—all in the span of just seven years. The songs are presented in chronological order, kicking off with the band’s first real breakthrough, Time Is on My Side, and wrapping things up with material from their then-latest studio release, Sticky Fingers.

Admittedly, the first half plays a little rougher. These early cuts showcase the Stones still in their formative years, leaning heavily into covers and basic R&B stompers that, while historically important, haven’t aged quite as gracefully as the later stuff. It’s the second record that really shines. That’s when the band hit their stride—originals like Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Sympathy for the Devil, Gimme Shelter, and Brown Sugar still sound as vital today as they did then.

For anyone even remotely curious about this band—or wondering why they’re still selling out stadiums 60 years on—Hot Rocks is the perfect entry point. No filler, no fluff, just the sound of one of the greatest rock bands of all time figuring it out in real time and then conquering the world.
